Convert PNG to WebP: how it works

Why use WebP instead of PNG

WebP files are usually far smaller than the same image as PNG or JPG, which makes pages load faster. Every current browser can show WebP, and it keeps transparency, so it can replace PNG for most graphics, screenshots and photos on a website.

How to convert

Drop your PNGs on the page. WebP is already selected as the output. The quality slider trades size against sharpness, and each image shows its size before and after, like 420 KB → 60 KB, so you can see what you saved. Scale the images down at the same time if they are bigger than they need to be.

The Format list only shows what your browser can write. If WebP is missing, your browser cannot encode it; try a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

Good to know

WebP is lossy at normal quality settings. For artwork where every pixel must be exact, use the PNG compression option instead, which is lossless. Everything runs on your device and no image is uploaded.

What it does

What you can do with your images

Convert iPhone photos, shrink files for email or the web, and crop to an exact size, one image or a whole batch at a time. Your images never leave your device.

  1. 01

Convert HEIC photos to JPEG or PNG

iPhones save photos as HEIC, which Windows, many websites and older apps can't open. Convert them to JPEG for sharing, or PNG when you need lossless quality. It works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox as well as Safari.

  2. 02

    Make images smaller

Scale images down from 1% to 100% and set the quality for JPEG, WebP, AVIF and PDF. WebP and AVIF are usually far smaller than JPEG at the same quality. Each image shows its size before and after, like 4.2 MB → 380 KB.

    Compress PNGs without losing anything

The PNG compression slider trades speed for size. The result is always pixel-for-pixel identical to the original: images with few colours are stored as a palette, and an alpha channel that isn't used is dropped.

    Crop, rotate and flip

Drag a crop box or type exact pixel values, and lock it to 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 9:16 for profile pictures, thumbnails and stories. Rotate in 90° steps, flip either way, and give any image its own scale.

Turn images into PDFs and icons

Save any image as a one-page PDF to email or upload where only documents are accepted, or as an ICO favicon with every standard icon size inside (16 px up to 256 px).

    Work in batches

Drop a whole folder of photos, set the format once, and convert them all. Save them one by one or all together as a single .zip.

What leaves your device

Said up front, before anything is dropped.

Stays on your device

  • Every step: reading, converting, cropping and saving. Private photos stay private.
  • The converted copy leaves out the original's metadata, such as camera details and GPS location.

Sent to the server

  • Nothing. Images are never uploaded.

Recorded

  • Anonymous usage data: the file name, size and format of each image, the settings used and whether it worked.
  • Never the image itself.

Questions

Asked often

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. A PNG with a transparent background keeps it when converted to WebP.

Is WebP supported everywhere?

All current browsers show WebP. Some older apps and email clients do not, so keep a JPG or PNG for those.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

It depends on the picture. Photos and gradients often shrink by more than half; flat graphics shrink less. The result card shows the exact saving for each file.

What quality setting should I use for WebP?

85 is a good default for photos and screenshots. Go lower for thumbnails and higher for images with fine text.

Can I convert WebP back to PNG?

Yes. Drop a WebP image and choose PNG as the output.

Will WebP images work in WordPress and other CMSs?

Current versions of WordPress and most site builders accept WebP uploads. Check older plugins and themes before switching a whole site.
