Convert AVI to MP4: how it works
Why AVI needs converting
AVI is an old container, and the video inside is often an old codec such as MPEG-4 Part 2 or DivX that phones do not play. The video has to be re-encoded to H.264 to play on iPhone.
How it works
Drop the AVI above. A small converter that runs in your browser reads it, writes H.264 video and AAC sound in an MP4, and puts the file in order for quick playback. The converter is downloaded the first time and kept.
Nothing leaves your device
The video is never uploaded. Everything happens locally.
Why AVI needs the converter
AVI is a container from the 1990s, and browsers do not read it or the codecs it usually holds, such as DivX, Xvid and MPEG-4 Part 2. That is why this page, unlike most of the others, needs the small converter (about 3 MB), downloaded once and kept in your browser. It runs on your device and sends nothing anywhere.
The first time, the download adds a moment before the progress bar moves. After that it is kept, and later AVI files start at once.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Does downloading the converter upload my video?
No. The converter is downloaded to your browser; nothing about your video is sent with it.
Will it be slower than other formats?
Re-encoding takes longer than copying. Time depends on the length and your device.
Can I get a better picture from an old AVI?
No. Re-encoding cannot add detail that is not in the file. The MP4 matches the AVI's quality; it cannot be better.
Does it work for DivX or Xvid AVIs?
Yes. They are read and converted to H.264.
How big will the MP4 be compared with the AVI?
Often smaller. H.264 is far more efficient than the codecs AVI used, so the MP4 can be much smaller at the same look.
Why did it ask to download something?
Browsers cannot read old AVI codecs. A small converter is downloaded once, runs locally, and is kept for next time.
