Convert MP4 to WebM: how it works
Why WebM
WebM is an open format made for the web. Chrome, Edge and Firefox play it, and it is often smaller than an MP4 at the same quality. Websites and apps that ask for WebM, or a background video you want to keep light, are the usual reasons to convert.
How to convert
Drop the video above; WebM is already chosen. The video is encoded as VP9 and the sound as Opus, using your browser's own video support. It takes longer than a plain repackage, because every frame is encoded again.
Before you convert
Older iPhones and some editors do not play WebM. If it has to work everywhere, an MP4 is the safer file. Your browser needs to be able to encode VP9, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox can.
When WebM is the right choice
Pick WebM when the video goes on a website. A background loop, a product demo or an animation in a page can be smaller as VP9 than as H.264 at the same look, and WebM is a royalty-free format. For a file you will send to people or edit, MP4 is still the safer format.
Encoding VP9 in a browser is slow, because every frame is worked on again. A short loop takes seconds; a long video takes a while. Trim and lower the resolution first if the file is only for a web page.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Does a website need me to upload the video here?
No. The WebM is made on your device. The only upload is the one you do to your own site.
Will WebM be smaller than the MP4?
Often yes at the same look, but not always. The card shows the new size next to the original.
Will it play on iPhone?
Recent versions of Safari play WebM, but older ones do not. For iPhone, an MP4 is the safe choice.
Why is the conversion slow?
Every frame is encoded again, and VP9 takes more effort than H.264. A long or large video takes longer.
Does the sound carry over?
Yes. It is encoded as Opus.
Can I use the WebM in a website's video tag?
Yes. Chrome, Edge and Firefox play it. Add an MP4 version for Safari if you need every browser.
