Compress a video: how it works
How to compress
Drop your video above and pick what to aim for: Email (25 MB), WhatsApp (16 MB), Discord (10 MB), your own size, or a quality without a size target. You can cap the resolution at 1080p, 720p or 480p, limit the frame rate, turn the sound down or off, and save your settings as a preset. Press the button and save the result.
How the size is hit
XPRTIX works out the bitrate that fits your target from the length of the video, encodes it, and checks the result. If it lands more than 5% over, it runs once more at a lower bitrate. A video that is already under the target is left alone, because compressing it again would only cost quality.
Trim first for a smaller file
Use Edit to trim the video or crop it before compressing. Cutting the parts you do not need is the biggest saving of all.
How the size is worked out
The target is turned into a bitrate: the size you ask for, minus room for the sound, divided by the length of the video, with a small safety margin. A 60-second video aimed at 10 MB gets roughly 1.3 megabits a second in total. XPRTIX never asks for more than 90% of the source's own bitrate, because spending more than the original had adds size and no detail.
Some targets cannot be reached well. Ask for 5 MB from a 20-minute video and the bitrate is so low the picture turns blocky. When that happens, lower the resolution to 480p or trim the video first, so the same bytes cover fewer pixels or fewer seconds.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Does anything leave my device while it compresses?
No. The encoding runs in your browser using its own video support, and the result is made on your device.
How small can a video get?
It depends on its length and the resolution you keep. As a guide, a minute of 720p video fits in about 10 MB with little visible loss.
Will the quality drop?
Some, always: that is how compression works. Aiming for a size you do not need loses more. Switch to quality mode and keep the slider high when the size does not matter.
Is there a faster way to pick a chat app's limit?
Which formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI. The result is an MP4 that plays on iPhone, Android and Windows.
Is there a size limit?
Videos up to about 2 GB are accepted. Very large ones depend on your device's memory, and the card says so if one is too big.
What happens if the video is already smaller than my target?
It is left as it is and the card says so. Re-encoding a video that already fits would only cost quality.
Why is the result sometimes a little under the target?
The bitrate leaves a safety margin so the file does not end up over. If a pass lands more than 5% over, a second pass runs at a lower bitrate.
