Compress a video for WhatsApp: how it works

The 16 MB limit

WhatsApp sends videos up to about 16 MB as ordinary videos. Anything bigger has to go as a document or gets squashed by the app. Compressing it yourself first lets you choose how it looks.

How to do it

The size is already set to 16 MB. Drop your video above and press the button. XPRTIX works out the bitrate that fits that size from the length of the video, encodes it, and checks the result. If it lands more than 5% over, it runs once more at a lower bitrate. A video that is already under 16 MB is left alone.

Get a better picture

Use Edit to trim the parts nobody needs, or lower the resolution to 720p in the options. Fewer pixels and fewer seconds leave more of the 16 MB for the part that stays. The result is an MP4, which plays on iPhone and Android.

16 MB as a video, 2 GB as a document

WhatsApp treats a file sent as a video differently from one sent as a document. As a document it can be far larger, up to about 2 GB, but the receiver gets a file to download rather than a clip that plays in the chat. As a video it is limited to about 16 MB, and WhatsApp compresses anything bigger itself, usually with a visible loss of detail.

Compressing it here first means you decide how it looks: a clean 720p at 16 MB usually beats what the app does on its own. For a long recording, send the best part. Trim it first, then compress.

What leaves your device

No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

Does it go through any server before WhatsApp?

No. It is compressed on your device. The only upload is the one you do when you send it in the chat.

What is the WhatsApp video limit?

About 16 MB for a video sent as a video. Larger ones are sent as documents or compressed by the app.

How long can a video be at 16 MB?

It depends on the resolution. As a guide, about two minutes of 480p or a minute of 720p fits, with little visible loss.

Is this better than letting WhatsApp compress it?

Often yes. You choose the resolution and the video is checked against the size, instead of a fixed squeeze applied when it is sent.

Will the result play on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. It is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which WhatsApp plays on both.

Can I use a different size?

Yes. Type any size in the options, or choose a quality instead.

Should I send it as a document instead?

Only if you need the original quality and the receiver can wait for a download. A document keeps the file untouched, up to about 2 GB.
