Compress a video for email: how it works

Why 25 MB

Gmail and many other mail services stop accepting attachments at about 25 MB, and the message itself grows by a third once the file is encoded for sending, so aim a little lower than the cap. The size is set to 25 MB here, and the result lands just under it.

Attach it, or send a link

If the video is still too big at an acceptable quality, a link is the better answer: upload it to a cloud drive and share the link instead of the file. For anything under a couple of minutes, 720p at 25 MB looks good.

Smaller, if the mail server is strict

Company mail often has a lower limit than 25 MB. Type the size you need in the options, trim the clip in Edit first, or cap the resolution at 480p to leave more of the budget for the part that matters.

What leaves your device

No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

What is the email attachment limit?

About 25 MB for Gmail, and similar or lower for other services. Company servers are often stricter.

Why not exactly 25 MB?

Attachments are encoded for sending and grow by about a third, so a file near the limit can still be refused. The result lands just under the target; type a smaller size for a safe margin.

Does anything leave my device?

No. The video is compressed in your browser. The only upload is the one you do when you attach it.

Which formats can I attach?

The result is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on nearly every device and mail app.

Can I make it smaller than 25 MB?

Yes. Type any size in the options, or switch to quality mode and lower the slider.

What if it is longer than a few minutes?

The picture has to get softer to fit. Trim the clip, cap the resolution at 480p, or share a link instead.
