Convert MP4 to M4A: how it works
A copy, not a re-encode
An M4A is AAC audio in an MP4-family container, which is exactly what most phone and camera videos already hold. When the sound in your video is AAC, it is lifted out as it is, so the result is identical to the original and made in seconds. If the sound is something else, it is converted to AAC.
Why M4A and not MP3
At the same size AAC usually sounds a little better than MP3, and Apple devices, Android, Windows and most players open it. Choose MP3 only when an old device or service demands it.
Only a section
Use Edit to keep one part, such as a single track from a long recording. Trimming sound this way re-encodes it, so the result is a new AAC file, not a copy.
Where an M4A plays
iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows and most music apps play M4A. It also suits podcasts and voice recordings, because AAC keeps speech clear at a small size.
If there is no sound
Screen recordings made without a microphone have no audio track, so there is nothing to extract. The card says so instead of giving you an empty file.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Is there any quality loss?
Not when the video's sound is already AAC. It is copied as it is.
What is the difference between M4A and MP3?
M4A holds AAC audio, usually a bit better than MP3 at the same size. MP3 plays on older devices.
Can I get an M4A from a screen recording?
Yes, if the recording has sound. A recording made with no microphone has no audio track to extract.
Does the sound stay on my device?
Yes. It is extracted in your browser and never uploaded.
Which videos work?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI.
Can I make a ringtone from it?
The M4A can be trimmed to the part you want in Edit. Turning it into an iPhone ringtone needs another step in a music app.
