Convert MP4 to WAV: how it works
When WAV is the right choice
WAV stores the sound as it is, with no compression. That makes it big, roughly 10 MB a minute, but it opens in every audio editor and carries no further loss when you work on it. Use it for editing, sampling or sending to a tool that wants a plain file.
If you only want to listen
For listening and sharing, MP3 or M4A are about a tenth of the size and sound the same to most ears. Compressed sound that is saved as WAV does not get better; it only gets bigger.
Trim first
Use Edit to trim to the part you want before you extract, which keeps the file small.
Where a WAV is useful
Audacity, GarageBand and other audio editors open it directly, and so do tools that ask for a plain, uncompressed file, such as some transcription and speech software. Record a video of an interview or a voice memo, then work on the sound without a second round of compression.
Long videos
A long video makes a long WAV, so a 30-minute recording is around 300 MB. If the file is for listening only, or you need to send it, save an M4A instead, or trim first.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Is a WAV better quality than an MP3?
It is not compressed again, so it holds exactly what was in the video. If the video's own sound was compressed, WAV cannot restore what was lost.
How big is a WAV?
Roughly 10 MB for each minute of sound.
Can I edit a WAV in Audacity or GarageBand?
Yes. WAV opens in every audio editor.
What if the video has no sound?
The card tells you there is no audio track to extract.
Does the video leave my device?
No. The sound is extracted in your browser.
Which videos work?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI.
