Convert GLB to OBJ: how it works

Why OBJ

Many older tools, some 3D printing workflows and plenty of free software still read OBJ and nothing newer. If your model is a GLB, converting to OBJ is how you get it into them.

The download is a zip with the .obj, a .mtl that names the materials, and the textures beside them.

How to convert

Drop the GLB, or a glTF with its files, choose Convert and OBJ, and press Convert. Every mesh is written in place, with the transforms of its nodes applied, so the model is where it was in the scene. Texture coordinates are flipped back to the OBJ convention.

Colour, opacity, shininess and the colour, normal and emission textures are written to the MTL. If a texture is WebP, the card warns you, because many OBJ tools cannot read it.

What OBJ cannot hold

OBJ has no PBR materials, so metalness and roughness are reduced to a colour and a shininess. It has no animation and no skeletons, so those are left out, and the card says so. If you only need the shape, for printing, save as STL instead.

Before you convert

OBJ files are large because they are text. If the GLB is heavy, reduce its polygons or shrink its textures first with Optimize, then choose OBJ: the output is written from the optimized model.

What leaves your device

No model is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; the compression engines and the validator are downloaded from this site the first time they are needed. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

What is in the zip?

The .obj, the .mtl and the texture images the materials use.

Are textures kept?

Yes: colour, normal and emission textures are written beside the OBJ and named in the MTL.

Why does my model look flatter in the other tool?

OBJ has no PBR materials, so metalness and roughness become a colour and a shininess.

What happens to animation?

It is left out, because OBJ cannot hold it. The card tells you.

Can I get an STL instead?

Yes. Choose STL under Save as for the shape alone, ready for printing.

Is my model uploaded?

No. The OBJ is written in your browser.
