Convert glTF to GLB: how it works

Why a glTF comes as many files

A .gltf file is only the description of a model: its scene, meshes and materials as text. The geometry sits in a separate .bin file and each texture is its own image, so one model can be a dozen files that must stay together in the right folders. Move one of them and the model breaks.

A GLB is the same model packed into one binary file. There is nothing to lose or to keep in step, which is why stores, viewers and game engines ask for it.

How to convert

Drop the .gltf together with its .bin and its textures, or drop them as one zip. The files are matched by the names the .gltf gives them, wherever they came from. Choose Convert and GLB, press Convert, then save the result.

If a file is missing, the card names it. A missing .bin stops the conversion, because the geometry is in it. A missing texture is replaced with a blank one-pixel image so the rest of the model can still be converted, and the card says so.

What stays the same

Convert repacks the model and does not change it: no vertices are merged, no textures resized. The result is checked against the glTF 2.0 spec with the Khronos validator, and the card shows whether it passed. If you also want a smaller file, choose Optimize instead, which does the same packing and then tidies and compresses the model.

Going the other way

Save as glTF zip instead of GLB to get a .gltf with its .bin and its images in one zip, which is easier to edit by hand or to put in version control.

What leaves your device

No model is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; the compression engines and the validator are downloaded from this site the first time they are needed. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

What is the difference between glTF and GLB?

They hold the same model. A glTF is a text file that points at separate .bin and image files; a GLB packs everything into one binary file.

Do I need to keep the folder structure?

No. Files are matched by name, so a flat drop of the .gltf, the .bin and the images works, and so does a zip with folders inside.

Does the conversion change the model?

No. Convert only repacks it. Use Optimize if you want duplicates merged, geometry compressed or textures shrunk.

Is my model uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser.

What if my glTF uses Draco or Meshopt compression?

It is read and written back as it is: the compressed geometry is decoded, and the result is written with the same compression.

Can I turn a GLB back into a glTF?

Yes. Drop the GLB, choose Convert, then Save as glTF zip.
