Convert OBJ to GLB: how it works
What an OBJ is missing
An OBJ file holds geometry and nothing else. Its colours live in a separate .mtl file, and each texture is another image the MTL names. The format has no animation and no modern materials, and a web page cannot load it without extra code.
A GLB is made for the web: one file with the geometry, the materials and the textures inside, loaded directly by three.js, Babylon.js and model-viewer.
How to convert
Drop the .obj together with its .mtl and the texture images, or drop them as one zip. Choose Convert and GLB, then press Convert. The MTL is read for colour, shininess, opacity and the diffuse, normal and emission maps.
If the .mtl or a texture is missing, the card lists it by name and the geometry is still converted, without those materials. Texture formats glTF cannot hold, such as TGA, BMP and TIFF, are left out and named; convert them to PNG or JPEG first with the Image tool.
What to expect
Faces with more than three corners are split into triangles, each object and material becomes its own mesh, and texture coordinates are flipped to glTF's convention so images are not upside down. OBJ has no up-axis rule: if the result lies on its back, the model was made with Z up, and it can be rotated in your engine or editor.
Materials are converted to glTF's metallic-roughness model as closely as the MTL allows. Old shininess values become a roughness, and nothing is made metallic.
Make it smaller
OBJ files are large because they are text. A GLB is already smaller, and Optimize goes further by merging duplicate vertices, adding any missing normals and compressing the geometry with Meshopt or Draco.

What leaves your device
No model is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; the compression engines and the validator are downloaded from this site the first time they are needed. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Do I need to upload the MTL and the textures too?
Drop them with the OBJ for colours and textures. Without them the geometry still converts, and the card names what was missing.
Why is my model upside down or lying on its side?
OBJ files do not say which axis points up. Many tools use Z up, glTF uses Y up. Rotate the model 90 degrees in your viewer or engine.
Why are my textures missing?
The texture file was not dropped with the model, or its format is not PNG, JPEG or WebP. The card lists the names it could not use.
Does it keep the object names?
Yes. Each OBJ object or group becomes a named mesh in the GLB.
Is the OBJ uploaded?
No. It is read and converted in your browser.
Can I convert many OBJ files at once?
Yes. Drop them all, with their materials and textures, and convert them together. Save them as one zip.
