Reduce polygons: how it works

When compression is not enough

Meshopt and Draco make a file smaller, but the model still has the same number of triangles, and it is the triangles that a phone has to draw. A scan, a CAD export or a sculpt can have millions of them, far more than a web page needs. The only way to lower that number is to remove triangles: polygon reduction, also called decimation or simplification.

XPRTIX uses the meshoptimizer simplifier, which collapses edges where the surface is flat or nearly so and keeps detail where the shape changes.

How to use it

Drop the model, press Reduce polygons on the finding that flags its triangle count (or switch it on under Optimize), and choose how much of the detail to keep. The slider is a target, not a promise: the simplifier stops early where removing more would change the shape too much, so asking for 20% may leave 25 or 30%.

Press Optimize, then use Side by side to compare the result with the original from the same angle. Turn on Wireframe to see the new triangles.

What it changes

Reducing polygons changes the shape. Fine edges round off, small parts can disappear, and thin features can thin out, so the more you take away the more you will see. Textures are kept and the surface keeps its UV coordinates, but a heavy reduction can stretch a texture in places. Always keep your original.

Reduction works on triangle meshes. Models with skeletons or morph targets are better reduced in the tool that made them.

Then make it smaller still

After reducing, leave Meshopt or Draco on to compress what is left, and cap the texture size. The result card shows the size and the triangle count before and after.

Questions

Asked often

How many triangles should a model have?

There is no fixed number. As a rough guide, about 200,000 is a sensible ceiling for a phone and 1,000,000 for a desktop, when the scene is one model.

Will the model look different?

Yes, a little at light reductions and clearly at heavy ones. Use Side by side to judge, and pick the lowest setting that still looks right at the size it will be shown.

Why did I get more triangles than I asked for?

The slider is a target. The simplifier stops where removing more would distort the shape, so it can keep more than the number you set.

Does it keep textures and UVs?

Yes. The material and textures stay, and each vertex keeps its UV coordinates, though a heavy reduction can stretch a texture in places.

Does compression reduce the triangle count?

No. Meshopt and Draco only make the data smaller. Reducing polygons is what lowers the count.

Is my model uploaded?

No. Reduction runs in your browser.
