Fit a GLB to a phone: how it works

A budget, not a guess

A model runs well on a phone when it stays under a few numbers: how many triangles it has, how many draw calls it needs, how much texture memory it uses and how big the file is. XPRTIX starts with rules of thumb for a phone (200,000 triangles, 100 draw calls, 64 MB of textures, 5 MB) and for a desktop (1,000,000, 400, 256 MB, 25 MB), and lets you enter your own.

Four meters show where the model stands against each limit, in white for the original and in colour for the result, so you can see at a glance what is still over.

What Fit to this budget does

It tries the steps in the order that costs the least to the eye. First it removes hidden geometry and caps the textures. If the triangle count is still over, it reduces polygons, correcting the ask by what actually came out until it lands near the limit. If the file is still too big, it uses smaller textures, then reduces polygons further.

Each try is made on a copy and measured by writing the file, and the list of tries is shown under the result, with the size and triangle count of each. If it cannot reach a limit without taking out parts yourself, it says so.

When to use it

Use it for a model headed for a web page, an app or an AR view where size and speed matter, and when you do not know which step to try first. If you already know what you want, set the pipeline by hand instead: every step is a switch on the same page.

Then take it from there

The settings it found become the settings on the page, so you can change one and run again. You can also pick parts yourself in the parts list: remove a part you do not need, or reduce just the heavy ones, and run Fit again.

Honest limits

The numbers are rules of thumb. Phones differ by years, and a scene with one model has more room than a scene with fifty. A result that fits the budget can still be slow on an old device, so test on the one you care about.

Questions

Asked often

What numbers does the phone budget use?

200,000 triangles, 100 draw calls, 64 MB of texture memory and a 5 MB file. They are rules of thumb, and you can enter your own under Custom.

Does it change how the model looks?

It starts with changes that do not show: hidden geometry and smaller textures. Reducing polygons does change the shape, so the result is shown next to the original, with a deviation view.

Why did it not reach the limit?

Some models need more taken away than reduction can do without breaking the shape. Remove parts you do not need in the parts list and run it again.

Does it reduce draw calls?

Not by itself. Merge meshes does that, and it is a setting you turn on, because it loses the separate parts.

Which compression does it use?

Draco when the file size is limited, since it is the smallest, and otherwise the one already chosen.

Is my model uploaded?

No. Every try runs in your browser.
