Convert STL to GLB: how it works
Why convert an STL
An STL is the standard file for 3D printing: a bare list of triangles with no colour, no textures and no names. Browsers and most web viewers cannot open it directly, and the file is large because every triangle stores its corners again.
A GLB loads on the web in one line of three.js or in a model-viewer tag, and can hold colour and materials as well.
How to convert
Drop the .stl, choose Convert and GLB, and press Convert. Both binary and ASCII STL are read. Triangles that have no normal in the file get one calculated from their corners.
The inspector tells you how many triangles the model has, which matters for the web: a print model can be several million triangles, far more than a phone can show smoothly.
Make it lighter for the web
An STL repeats each corner for every triangle that uses it. Optimize merges the corners that are identical, which makes the file smaller and the GPU faster, then compresses the geometry with Meshopt or Draco. Faces that meet at a hard edge keep separate corners, so flat surfaces stay flat and the model does not look smoothed.
What it cannot do
An STL has no colour, so the GLB is plain grey. It also has no idea which way is up: print models usually have Z up, so one may appear lying down in a viewer, and can be rotated there. The inspector flags open edges, which means holes in the surface; repairing them is not part of this version.

What leaves your device
No model is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; the compression engines and the validator are downloaded from this site the first time they are needed. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Does it work with binary and ASCII STL?
Yes. Both are detected automatically.
Why is my STL grey?
STL files carry no colour or material. Add them in your 3D editor or viewer after converting.
Why is the model lying on its side?
Print models usually use Z as up and glTF uses Y. Rotate it in your viewer or engine.
Can I shrink a very large STL?
Choose Optimize. It merges identical vertices and compresses the geometry. It does not reduce the number of triangles.
Is my STL uploaded?
No. It is read and converted in your browser, which matters for unreleased designs.
Can I convert a PLY too?
Yes, the same way. PLY files with vertex colours keep them.
