XPRTIX 3D

Why is my 3D model slow?: how it works

What slows a model down

Four things account for most slow models: too many triangles, too many draw calls, textures that take too much memory, and a file that is too big to download quickly. The inspector measures all four, and says whether each is a problem on a phone or only on a weak desktop.

These numbers are rules of thumb, not measurements or limits: what a device can draw depends on its GPU, the shaders and the rest of the scene. As a rough guide, XPRTIX flags above about 200,000 triangles, 100 draw calls and 64 MB of texture memory for a phone, and above 1,000,000, 400 and 256 MB for a desktop.

What it checks

Triangle count and draw calls, counting every instance in the scene. Texture sizes, and the memory they take once decoded, which is about four bytes a pixel and a third more for mipmaps. Textures over 2048 pixels or not a power of two. Duplicate vertices, meshes, materials and textures. Unused nodes, materials and data. Missing normals, and normals that point the wrong way. Open edges, which matter for 3D printing. Whether the geometry is compressed.

GLB and glTF files are also checked against the glTF 2.0 spec with the Khronos validator, and its errors and warnings are listed.

Findings and fixes

Each finding says what it found and why it matters. When Optimize can fix it, the card offers that fix. Some findings have no fix in this version, such as a high triangle count or open edges, and the card says so instead of offering one.

Formats

The inspector reads GLB, glTF, OBJ with MTL, STL and PLY. A model that arrives as a glTF is validated as it came; any other is validated when you save it as a glTF.

Questions

Asked often

What triangle count is too many?

There is no fixed number: it depends on the device and the scene. As a rough guide, about 200,000 is a sensible ceiling for a phone and 1,000,000 for a desktop, when the scene is one model.

What is a draw call?

A request to the GPU to draw one mesh with one material. Every mesh and material combination in the scene is at least one, and a few hundred is about the most many phones handle comfortably.

Why does texture memory matter more than file size?

A texture is stored compressed in the file but decoded to four bytes a pixel on the GPU, so a 200 KB image can take 22 MB of graphics memory.

Does the inspector change my model?

No. It only reads it. Convert and Optimize are separate actions.

Is my model uploaded?

No. It is inspected in your browser.

What are open edges?

Edges that belong to only one triangle, so the surface has a hole. They matter when printing, not when viewing.
