Find what makes a model heavy: how it works

Totals do not tell you what to fix

A model with three million triangles is slow, but three million is not an instruction. Usually a few parts hold most of them: a wheel with a hundred thousand, a seat modelled in full, a logo drawn in curves. Finding those is the whole job.

The parts list ranks every part of the model by its own triangles, with a bar for how it compares, and the total of its children where it is a group.

Look at it in the model

Click a part in the list and the rest of the model fades, so you see exactly what it is. Click the model, in the Original view, and the list jumps to the part under the cursor. The part card shows its triangles, draw calls, size and the groups under it. Search finds a part by name, and Tree shows how the model is put together.

Decide for each part

For a part you can choose Keep, Reduce (keep a share of its detail, such as 30%) or Remove. A choice for a group covers everything inside it. Parts you changed show a tag in the list, and a removed one is struck through. The choices are applied when you run Optimize, and the result is compared with the original, with the deviation view showing what moved.

Which model parts count

Parts are the nodes of the model. A model exported as one merged mesh has one part, and nothing to rank; one with hundreds of named nodes, as from a CAD or a game asset, has plenty. The list works for any model with several nodes, which in practice means GLB and glTF files, and anything converted from them.

A part with no triangles of its own, such as a group or an empty, still shows in the tree, because a choice made for it covers what is inside.

Questions

Asked often

What does the number next to a part mean?

Its triangle count. In the tree view it is the total of the part and everything inside it.

Why does my model have only one part?

It was exported as a single merged mesh. There is nothing inside it to rank.

Does removing a part change my original file?

No. The choices apply to the copy made when you run Optimize. The original is never changed.

What does Reduce do for one part?

It lowers that part's triangle count, keeping the share you choose, with the simplifier used for the whole model, and leaves the rest alone.

Does it find parts that are hidden inside others?

The hidden-geometry step does that. The parts list is by structure and by triangle count, not by what can be seen.

Is my model uploaded?

No. The list is made in your browser.
