Remove the sound from a video: how it works

How to remove the sound

Drop your video. The editor opens on it: tick Remove sound, then press Apply, and press the button to save a copy with no audio track. The original is not changed.

Why remove it

To post a clip without background talk or music, to remove a copyrighted track before you upload, or to share a screen recording that picked up sounds you would rather not. A file with no audio track is also a little smaller.

Keep the rest

The same window trims and crops, so you can cut the clip and mute it in one go. If you want the sound as a separate file instead, use MP4 to MP3.

Removing the track versus silencing it

There are two ways to make a video quiet. Turning the volume to zero keeps an audio track that is silent. Removing the track, which is what Remove sound does, leaves the file with no audio at all, so a player shows no speaker icon, and there is nothing left to recover.

It also saves a little space. Sound in a typical video is around 128 kbps, about 1 MB a minute, and a clip with no track does not carry it. Before you post something with background music, this is the only way to be sure it is gone.

What leaves your device

No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

Is the clip sent anywhere?

No. The sound is removed in your browser and the new file is saved on your device.

Does the original file stay as it was?

Yes. You get a new file and the original is not touched.

Does the video get a lower quality?

The picture is written again at high quality, so any change is very small.

Can I mute only part of a video?

Not yet. Mute removes the sound for the whole clip, though you can trim the clip first.

Can I keep the sound as its own file?

Yes. Use MP4 to MP3 to save the sound separately, then mute the video.

Can I add my own music afterwards?

Not here. Mute gives you a silent video that you can open in any editor.
