Trim a video: how it works

How to trim

Drop your video, then press Edit on it. Drag the two handles on the bar to choose where it starts and ends, or type the times. The picture above shows the frame you are on. Apply, then press the button to save a trimmed copy.

Quality

Trimming, cropping and rotating all re-encode the video, which is done at high quality, so a small loss is possible.

Cuts that land on the frame you chose

Trimming here re-encodes the video, which is why the cut is exact: it starts on the frame you picked, not on the nearest keyframe a quick copy would force. The video is written again at high quality, so the saving in time is less than a copy, and the result is clean at both ends.

Type the start and end, or drag the two handles and use the arrow keys to move by a tenth of a second (hold Shift to move by five seconds). The preview shows the frame you are on.

Need more than a cut?

The same window crops and rotates. Crop a video to a ratio such as 9:16, rotate it, or remove the sound. To make the result small, trim first, then compress it.

What leaves your device

No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions

Asked often

Is my clip sent anywhere while I trim it?

No. Trimming happens in your browser and the result is saved on your device.

Does trimming reduce quality?

The trimmed video is re-encoded at high quality, so any change is very small.

Can I trim to an exact time?

Yes. Type the start and end times, or use the arrow keys on a handle to move by a tenth of a second.

Can I trim several videos the same way?

Each video has its own cut, set in its own Edit window. Settings such as the format apply to all of them.

Which formats can I trim?

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI. You get an MP4 back unless you choose another format.

Is the cut frame accurate?

Yes. Because the video is encoded again, the cut starts and ends on the frames you chose.
