Turn a video into a GIF: how it works
How to make a GIF
Drop a video above. Choose a width (320, 480 or 640 pixels) and a frame rate (10, 15 or 20 per second), then press the button. Use Edit first to pick the part you want, because a GIF is limited to 30 seconds.
Keeping the file small
GIFs are far bigger than the video they come from, since they hold every frame as a picture. A narrower width and fewer frames per second make the biggest difference. For most clips 480 pixels at 15 frames per second looks smooth and stays a reasonable size.
Why a GIF at all
GIFs play everywhere without a player, which makes them handy for chat, docs and emails. If you only need to share a clip, a compressed MP4 is smaller and sharper.
Doing the sums on GIF size
A GIF has no video compression. Each frame is a picture with at most 256 colours, so the size follows frames × the area of each frame. A 10-second clip at 15 frames a second is 150 frames; at 480 pixels wide that is a few MB, and at 640 it is noticeably more. Halving the frame rate or the width cuts the size by roughly half or more.
The limit is 30 seconds. Pick the part you want in Edit. GIFs carry no sound, so an audio track is left out.
Make the source smaller first
A long or large video makes a slow, heavy GIF. Compress the video or trim it, then make the GIF from the result.

What leaves your device
No video is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser; a small converter (about 3 MB) is downloaded once, and only for a format the browser cannot read. What is recorded.

Questions
Asked often
Is my clip sent anywhere to make the GIF?
No. The frames are read and the GIF is built in your browser.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. Use Edit to choose which part of the video to use.
Why is my GIF so big?
A GIF stores each frame as an image. Use a narrower width, a lower frame rate or a shorter clip.
Can I make the GIF play once instead of looping?
Not yet. Every GIF made here loops forever, which is what most sites and chats expect.
Does it keep the sound?
No. GIFs have no audio.
Why are the colours slightly different?
A GIF holds only 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients can show bands. That is a limit of the format.
